- Commercial Roof Clean at ‘Drew and Co.’ industrial unit.
- Roof was cleaned using steam, with slight pressure to remove organic matter.
- Cherry picker was used for the front of the building, and scaffolding was erected at the rear of the building.
- Gutters were emptied of all organic matter.
The Challenge
One of the first challenges on this project was that the Drew and Co. unit is a working office from Monday to Friday. Works could have been completed this over a weekend, but we allowed 5 working days for this project, and the client needed it completed by the following week to align with other contractors working on the unit.
We were able to access the roof using a cherry picker at the front of the unit, but unfortunately there was limited access at the rear, with uneven and soft ground making it unsafe for any machinery.
There was no man safe system (fall protection) installed on the unit. Each side of the roof was approximately 12 metres long, so we had to find a way of cleaning this area safely.
The Solution
As Drew and Co. is a working unit, we communicated with staff members at the start of each day to discuss where we were working, and liaised with them regarding their deliveries, as this meant we had to avoid certain areas at specific times of the day. Safety signage was put into place to direct staff members to walk around safely, and a team member was on ground level at all times to guide any public around the cherry picker.
Scaffolding was erected at the back of the unit, which allowed us to gain access to the roof. Correct PPE was worn at all times when working at high level. The cherry picker was used around the front of the building, by operators carrying an IPAF licence .
The roof was capable of being reached from scaffolding, and the cherry picker, plus the use of our carbon fibre 50ft pole. A flat surface cleaner was used on the end of the pole, to give an even clean, covering a bigger surface area.
The Results
This Commercial Roof Clean delivered fantastic results for our client. We were able to work alongside them easily, and completed the project in time for them to commence further works with different contactors. Our training and experience allowed us to complete the works safely using our IPAF licence, and all employees wore suitable PPE to carry out the works.
We steamed the whole roof to remove the majority of the organic matter, followed by an application of HSE approved Sodium Hypochlorite to remove the more stubborn organic growth. All gutters were emptied of organic matter and disposed of legally using our Waste Carriers Licence.
In addition to the roof clean, we also cleaned the sides of the units as the client was having some new signage installed and wanted the whole unit cleaned prior to this.
